With its retro-inspired aesthetics, multi-functionality, and unique audio performance, the MC331 caters to audiophiles seeking warmth, versatility, and value. After spending quality time with the MC331, here’s my detailed take on this promising device.

Whats in the box:

Straight out of the box, the MC331 makes a strong first impression. Its retro-inspired aesthetic, complete with prominent vacuum tubes and a classic VU meter, strikes the perfect balance between nostalgic and a bit of steampunk charm and modern refinement. The tubes are securely housed under transparent plastic tube covers to protect against accidental burns. The VU meter, with its lively dancing needle, adds both function and flair, providing real-time signal strength feedback to help fine-tune volume and prevent distortion or clipping.

The MC331’s compact form factor is another standout feature, making it a seamless fit for virtually any setup. Its thick, durable aluminum chassis is the kind of sturdiness Fosi is known for, while the well designed front panel ensures effortless operation with easy to see input indicator light. Whether you’re adjusting settings via the tactile front knobs or using the included remote, the MC331’s design prioritizes both functionality and ease of use.

The MC331’s internals include the proprietary FS-2348B-2F DAC chip developed by Fosi Audio, paired with the TPA3221 amplifier chipset. This combination delivers clean and precise audio with a signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 100dB and a total harmonic distortion (THD) of less than 0.03%. The DAC chip provides a sound signature that’s surprisingly reminiscent of R2R DACs, offering smoothness and detail without the typical grit associated with traditional analog tube amps.

Its maximum output power of 105W per channel at 4 ohms ensures ample headroom for driving most bookshelf or desktop speakers. For headphone enthusiasts, the MC331 supports impedance ranges from 32 to 300 ohms, making it compatible with a wide variety of cans.

Setting up and using the MC331 is refreshingly simple, making it a breeze for daily operation. Switching between inputs is straightforward—just press the volume knob to cycle through the options. The intuitive front panel includes an easy-to-see light indicator, so you’ll always know which input is active. The volume knob offers a satisfying tactile feel, while the treble and bass tone knobs have a subtle notch at the zero position, making adjustments precise and intuitive.

For added convenience, you can use the included remote control to fine-tune settings from a distance. Bluetooth pairing is equally effortless, with a quick and stable connection that holds strong even across the room. It's a well-thought-out design that prioritizes user comfort without sacrificing functionality.

Bluetooth support, featuring SBC and AAC codecs no LDAC support unfortunately, but still with AAC it makes wireless playback convenient with a stable connection range of over 10-15 meters.

The GE 5654W tubes which comes with the MC331 is originally crafted for military-grade reliability and has become a favorite of mine across several tube amps. Most recently, I paired them with the Xduoo MH-02, which comes stock with Chinese 6J1 tubes. While the 6J1 tubes deliver a notably bright sound, the GE 5654W, which I first encountered on the MC331, offers a completely different experience. These tubes are known for their warm, bassy profile with lush, thick mids that make vocals rich and engaging and an overall laidback relax sound.

However, when paired with the MC331’s DAC chip (Fosi’s FS-2348B-2F), the 5654W’s natural warmth and bass-heavy character are remarkably tamed. The result is a sound that feels more refined, with better detail retrieval and a slight brightness that brings added energy to the top end. This pairing also opens up the soundstage, offering more space and air, while improving tonal accuracy and timbre for both male and female vocals.

Interestingly, the MC331 with this combination starts to resemble the sound of an R2R DAC/amp, shedding some of the overly analog-like or gritty characteristics that tube amps can sometimes exhibit. The result is a balanced and engaging listening experience that feels both natural and technically impressive.

Sound Characteristics: What i use for testing the MC311 is my vintage pair of Victor bookshelf speakers and Sivga Anser Headphones, Hidizs MP145, Artti T10, Kiwi Ears KE4 IEMs with Hiby R6 III and Samsung Tab streaming Tidal as source.

Note: The MC311 does not supports bit prefect playback so you have to disable bit perfect mode on your player or app in order to play dsd or any bit perfect tracks.

The Fosi FS-2348B-2F DAC chip on the MC311 deliveres a clean and articulate sound signature. Unlike other typical tube amps, the MC331 avoids veering into overly gritty territory, instead opting for a smooth and balanced tonality. The 5654W tubes add a layer of warmth and richness, giving the sound an organic quality that enhances vocals and midrange detail.

Let’s start at the bottom. The MC311delivers bass with authority. Compared to my xduoo mh-02 with the stock Chinese 6J1 tubes, the low end is weightier, more textured, and slightly more rounded on the mC311 with the 5654w tubes. It’s not a basshead’s delight, but it fills the room with satisfying warmth and body, Think tight and musical, not boomy or overstated,

Oh, the mids! yes the mids! The midrange feels lush, organic, and just a touch romantic. Vocals, whether male or female, take on a creamy quality, It’s the kind of sound that makes you want to revisit your favorite acoustic tracks just to revel in the detail and emotion. Warm but never muddy, it strikes an excellent balance that makes instruments like guitars and pianos sing with natural timbre.

The highs are smooth, airy, and well-extended, without a hint of harshness. These tubes don’t try to shout at you with overly bright or brittle treble. Instead, they gently guide you through the upper frequencies with a refinement that’s easy on the ears. Cymbals, strings, and high-hats sparkle, but they do so politely, with none of the sibilance that can ruin a great listening session.

Soundstage & Dynamics:

The Fosi MC311 also impresses in soundstage and dynamics. The stage widens, giving a sense of openness that feels more three-dimensional than standard tubes. There’s a sense of depth that adds layers to the music, making instruments feel distinct and well-separated. Dynamics, too, see an upgrade—there’s more punch, subtlety, and a livelier overall presentation that makes even the busiest tracks sound coherent.

While it won’t rival high-end separates, it punches well above its weight for a hybrid amp in this price range.

Characteristics & Use Case

Pairing the MC311 with the Fosi ZD3, using the bypass switch to utilize the ZD3 as a DAC-only and connecting it to the MC311 via RCA, unlocked an entirely new realm of sonic bliss. The synergy between these two devices was so transformative that it feels worthy of an entirely separate review to do it justice.

The MC331 checks a lot of boxes, but there’s always room for improvement. The headphone output, while decent, could use a bit more muscle when it comes to driving high-impedance headphones and not exactly a biggie for me since i use it mostly with my IEMs.

And while it does a great job overall, adding playback support for bit-perfect tracks and Hi-Res LDAC Bluetooth codec support would truly elevate the MC331 to a complete, all-in-one package.

Final Thoughts

The Fosi Audio MC331 hybrid tube amplifier showcases just how much compact Hi-Fi gear can achieve today. With its clean yet warmly textured sound, versatile functionality, and well-thought-out design, it’s a fantastic option for both new to the audio world and seasoned audiophiles.
